To meet a requirement for a low weight and low cost antenna for installation onboard a large passenger aircraft, a mechanically steered hemispherical lens antenna was investigated using the commercially available MOM software FEKO^<TM>. In order to simplify construction, a homogeneous lens reflector was chosen. The lens was found to focus to a cigar shaped region which degraded with scan angle. Extending the reflecting plate beyond the edges of the hemispherical lens, using a small horn feed with a dielectric insert and distorting the shape of the lens were all found to improve the gain of the lens over a wider scan angle range. A reflector lens design giving 23dBic and 80% aperture efficiency across the required ±45° scan range is demonstrated. Progress to date on a 26.5dBic design is also made, as is comparison to equivalent conventional designs using higher weight materials.
