In the current reactive routing protocols (such as DSR) for MANETs, once one link of the route breaks down, the source node will attempt to find an available route in its cache, or make a flooding based maintenance when there are no available route in the cache. In this paper we proposed a prediction-based maintenance mechanism which finds an alternative route before the currently using route breaks down such that packet transmission can be consecutively conducted without a temporary halt. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that by using this prediction-based route maintenance algorithm, we can achieve a high packet delivery ratio, small end-to-end packet delay and small amount of overhead packets.
