This article examines to what extent Japanese pre-service teaching program has been successful in student teachers' critical reflection on one's own teaching as a component of any professional development. A pre-service teacher training program should create appropriate conditions for local contexts in order to enable student teachers to fully develop their individual abilities, including cognitive skills for self-reflection, as well as language management strategies. An increased awareness of their cognitive skills and pedagogical techniques would help student teachers adjust flexibly in any given context and develop their innate individual abilities as prospective teachers.
