The Bi_4Ti_3O_<12> powders were synthesized by a hydrothermal route. The influence of hydrothermal conditions on crystal structures and morphologies of Bi_4Ti_3O_<12> particles was studied. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. These results revealed that the Bi_4Ti_3O_<12> powders prepared thus possessed a plate-like shape, a typical bismuth layered perovskite structure, and a wide UV-vis absorption peak. Additionally, the formation mechanism of the Bi_4Ti_3O_<12> nanoplates was also discussed.
