To assess the cardiac left ventricular function in multi-slice CT, we propose an automatic, robust and fast segmentation technique that uses the adaptive gradient profiles to delineate myocardial boundaries. Our method is composed of two main steps. First, endocardial contours are extracted by using adaptive thresholding and region growing. To involve papillary muscles inside the contours, the endocardial contours are refined by using ray-casting. Second, epicardial contours which have both a myocardial threshold value and a maximum gradient are chosen. Then, curvature-based contour fitting is performed to overcome problems associated with heterogeneity of the myocardium intensity and lack of clear delineation between the myocardium and adjacent anatomic structures. Our method has been applied to seven dynamic CT data sets. For accuracy measure, the endo and epicardial contours are evaluated with the manually segmented contours. As the experimental results, the average distance difference error was 0.56mm and the overlapping region ratio was 82%. The proposed method was finished within 1sec. on average.
