Peale's self-portrait, The Artist in His Museum (1822), represents the painter's concept of the artist-scientist in its cultural context. He portrays himself as a type of the artist-scientist, whose role is to enlighten the citizens of a new national culture. His Philadelphia Museum, in the background of the portrait, is his major contribution in his self-appointed function. Peale's selection and organization of his collection in the portrait, together with depictions of characters in the museum, expresses his world-view based on natural history. The concept of the artist-scientist, and the idea of the museum as a cultural institution, drawn from the analysis of this portrait, may be compared with corresponding concepts and institutions in other cultures.
