The navigation, mapping, surveying and tracking industries have been revolutionized by the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) over the past two decades. A typical GNSS involves Satellites, Ground Reference Station to determine the positions (longitude, latitude, and altitude) of user terminals locate anywhere in the world. The Global Positioning System (GPS) from USA is the only fully operational Satellite Navigation System today, which drives the tremendous demands increasing in many different application areas. In this paper, we present a survey of several major GNSS (GLONASS, Galileo, Compass), as well as several regional systems (Compass-I, QZSS). Planned improvements have been investigated for the next generation GNSS compared to the currently available systems in order to delivery better accuracy, availability, cost efficiency and reliability.
