Space-time codes can achieve the diversity gain in a multi-path environment without additional bandwidth requirement. Recent study results reported that satellite systems can also achieve this diversity gain by using space-time codes in a cooperative network with terrestrial repeaters. The space-time block coding (STBC) schemes can expect more diversity gain as the number of transmit antennas are increased. However, we cannot design STBC schemes with code rate 1 achieving full diversity for more than two transmit antennas. To overcome this limitation, a quasi-orthogonal space-time block coding (QO-STBC) schemes were proposed at the expense of decoder complexity and diversity gain. In this paper, we evaluate STC schemes for future satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (S-DMB) systems in various aspects. The STBC schemes introduced in this paper can incorporate the maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding by simple linear detection as they eliminate the interference factors using a Givens rotation.
