Only a few reports have been hitherto published on the distribution factors of heavy metals from the sedimentological viewpoint, though many authors have reported physico-chemical factors of distribution. This paper represents the heavy metal distribution of the bottom sediments in some lagoons and bays in Hokkaido, which have been well studied from the sedimentological viewpoint. The results are summarized as shown below. 1) Five elements in the dried samples collected from the bottom surface are determined by emission spectrographic analysis as follows; Fe: 1.3-3.8%, Mn: 130-1000ppm, Mn/Fe: 0.006-0.050, Ni: <4-23ppm, Cu: 19-100 ppm, V: 33-160 ppm. 2) Careful examination suggests that the distribution of some metals depends on the depositional environments through all of the lakes and lagoons treated in this paper. Fe and Mn are concentrated in the sandy sediments of the marginal shallow part of the lakes and in the muddy sediments of the inflowing part of the river, while Cu is abundant in the muddy sediments of the delta and the central part. However, there are no characteristic differences of the distribution of Ni and V in the surveyed areas, except for the lake Abashiri, where all heavy metals have a decreasing tendency of their concentrations in the central deeper part of intensively reducing conditions.
