Since the bubble economy burst in the early 1990's, corporate governance has been receiving more attention in Japan. And many corporate governance principles have been created. But it can be considered that the principles were not valuable for contacts with companies. In the 21st century, corporate governance is becoming ever more important. The aim of this paper is to sort and position corporate governance principles by conducting basic research in Japan. This paper is an attempt to clarify what corporate governance principles are and to establish a foundation. First, the purposes and significance of corporate governance principles are examined. Second, a systematization of corporate governance principles is presented. Then, two elements of corporate governance principles are examined.
