Services offered by software firms can be categorized into standardized, rule-based services and non-standardized process-based services. When their target market is distinguished into open market (large number of non-specialized users) and club market (small number of specialized users), the services offered by software firms can be classified into four : process-club ; rule-club ; rule-open ; and process-open services. Among these, several conditions on how club-process type Japanese software firms function are analyzed in this paper, including how they shift their business activities to other type of software services. With today's highly advanced information systems, it will be possible for the software firms to extract the combinations of processes needed by users and to cope with individual demand in an instant. This will lead to growth of process-open type businesses like software package customization, among Japanese software firms being more experienced and skilled at process type services.
