The purpose of this study is to analyze the emergence of a new community in a small Japanese town and examine the role of cultural performance in its emergence. The town in question is Oizumi-machi in Gunma-ken and the new community is based around the large numbers of Brazilians who are resident in the town. The study will argue that the lived experience of many of the Brazilians in Oizumi is at odds with the conclusions drawn by previous studies of foreign labor in Oizumi. This study will seek to describe how the various residents of the town of Oizumi are continuing to negotiate their positions within the town itself and in terms of the regional and national context. The study will seek to address the following questions: Is it fair to say that Brazilians living in Oizumi are marginalized, and if so why and how, and to what extent are the activities of Brazilians themselves able alleviate the effects of any such marginalization? How are Brazilians in Oizumi constructing space for themselves within the dynamics that define established society in Oizumi through the establishment and legitimization of distinctive cultural practices?
