The Ethical Cord of Japan Teachers Union declares that teachers are laborers. Though there are many disputesabout this declaration, I will not go further into this issue now, but We should like to point out a remarkable change in the post-war concept on the teaching profession. Teaching profession implies twofold meaning, on one hand spiritual and on the other economical. Traditional concept in Japan concerned in the former side only, and today the emphasis is laid mainly on the latter side. Both views are one-sided, but these two sides are equally important. How to join these two factors together-this is a basic problem for the foundation of the true and real ethics of teaching profession. To answer this question, we must deal with the common problem in the professional ethics in general, how to join the ethical imperative with the needs of everyday life. In this article, we discuss theoretically our point of view on this problem (Chap. I) first, and then the basic concepts as the methodological means (Chap. II). Further substantial study will be presented in the next chance. An outline of the contents as follows: Preface Chapter I. Professional ethics as ethics of everyday life. §1. Ethics and everyday life. §2. Ethical meaning of profession. Chapter II. Basic factors of professional ethics. §1. Patterns of conduct. §2. Ethical meaning of rationality.
