Since the Course of Study of Senior High School was revised in 1960, "Shakai" course has been divided into two, "Seiji-Keizai" (Politics and Economics) and "Rinri-Shakai"(Ethics and Society). According to the discription of "Rinri- Shakai" course, one of the aims of course is to provide students opportunities to understand modern society scientifically and rationally and to consider desirable human relations within the society. The topic of this article is to examine the role of scientific and rational thinking in this course. Roughly speaking, the course covers three areas, phychological, ethical and sociological. These areas are related to two disciplines, social science and philosophy, though social studies in high school can not be identified with these disciplines as such. Therefore, one of the main difficulties in teaching this course on lies the tension between two heterogenious ways of approach, or in other words, on the eternal prblem of knowledge and value. Within the present social climate of Japan, it will be too optimistic to assume that a rational and scientific study of society will show us a way of value judgement automatically. Here we may get some suggestions from Max Weber's work on the examination of the nature and role of social science. According to his conclusion, the science as such can not provide a certain value judgement. Still with through rational and scientific consideration based on the facts, one realizes that he can not ascribe his own responsibility to make choice among values. This rational thinking does help man when he makes his own decision.
