This study explores the spatial contexts (physical and socio-cultural) of gravitational, geomagnetic, and seismological investigations in Meiji Japan. In the 1880s, European and American scientists invited by the Japanese government were interested in the geophysical figures of an under-surveyed blank: Japan. Geophysical expeditions were deployed throughout Japan, bringing the laboratory staff and instruments into the field. On the other hand, some geophysical phenomena such as earthquakes were housed in observatories. Through these investigations, initially foreign scientific practices were appropriated into the context of Meiji Japan. Upon the departure of foreigners from the country, Japanese practitioners became independent scientists, and the geopolitical terrain of geophysical practices was domesticated by the Meiji state which has coordinated the scientific activities within its own interests.
