A major issue associated with psychiatric care in Japan is the existence of patients who undergo so-called social hospitalization. In response to this issue, efforts have been made in recent years to promote psychiatric care focused on short-term hospitalization and to prevent separation from community life. However, many patients repeat readmissions to psychiatric hospitals, which like long-term hospitalization leads to separation from community life. In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the actual condition of patients who repeat readmissions as well as problems related to their social life in order to obtain knowledge regarding the support services necessary for preventing readmission and enabling patients to settle in their communities, with a discussion on the problems caused by readmissions. Analysis results showed that patients who repeat readmissions tended to have friends who they met during treatment and had a broad network of contacts. Regarding needs in continuing community life, many patients desired opportunities to engage in activities with friends who had the same illness. However, the present findings showed that repeated readmissions did not necessarily exacerbate the impairment of lifestyles, and that the specific needs of patients who repeat readmissions did not significantly differ from those of other patients.
