Herein, we investigated the causes of livelihood problems (particularly problems such as poverty, disease, care, parenting, and abuse), as well as the structure of relationships between them, that commonly arise in today's working families, with reference to previous research. Two types of causes, "external causes" and "internal causes", are involved in the development of livelihood problems in working families. The former includes labor issues such as low wages and unstable employment, while the latter includes issues related to individual families, such as disease, disability, care, aging, divorce, and parenting. These two types of causes are mutually related, and are structured in such a way that livelihood problems related to one type of cause leads to the development of problems related to the other type of cause. Masako Kawakami further analyzed the structure of internal causes by classifying them into "general causes" and "special causes". In addition, Kawakami stated that external, general, and special causes of livelihood problems all contribute to family disintegration and other problems, and tend to converge into "specific factors". The dynamism and logic of this transformation and convergence into "specific factors" was examined as a process of "impoverishment". Due to recent increases in the number of working poor and other major factors, livelihood problems are likely to further escalate. Based on this background, the establishment of more empirical and scientific studies regarding livelihood problems is necessary in the near future.
