This study examined how community-based support networks have been developed by community-based comprehensive support centers. Previous studies have examined the development of community-based support networks using traditional and/or nontraditional community welfare resources. This study, using a survey conducted with members of community-based comprehensive support centers in Hokkaido, Japan, investigated (1) The value and specific sources used to get information from frail elderly people and (2) The methods of network-development used in community-based comprehensive support centers. Results indicated the following: (a) A variety of community welfare resources are used in the centers regardless of the geographical area (metropolitan or depopulated areas); and (b) Community based comprehensive support centers use two methods of obtaining information for frail elderly people, one for obtaining initial information and the second for obtaining detailed information.
