One year recording of BBT of 71 athletes belonging to volley-ball and hand-ball clubs of Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education revealed that the incidence of the menstrual cycles with biphasic BBT patterns was less than 30% in total cycles of them for a year. Only 8 athletes among them had the cycles with biphasic BBT more than 50% in a year. An endocrinolgical studies was carried out with these athletes. The RIA assays of LH, FSH, E_2, progesterone, testosterone, and prolactin done 5 to 7 times in the cycle showed their normal hormonal profiles with LH and E_2 surge to prove ovulatory regular menses. A test of pulsatile release of LH was also tried on them. The result showed that all of them had LH pulses. These facts may indicate that their reproductive axes possess normal functions and are resistant to the stress of exercise. However, they had abnormal cycles besides normal ones. Those abnormalities were shortened luteal phase, prolonged follicular phase, the cycle with monophasic BBT patterns and oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea. Namely, they have a tendency that their menstrual functions easily incline to abnormal menses. A study to clarify the process of this transion will become a clue to understand the menstrual disorders caused by the exercise.
