In order to see the effect of chronic strenous exercise upon the menstrual functions, 66 students belonging to the volley ball and hand ball clubs of Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education have been continuously recording B.B.T. since April in 1983. On analyzing their records for the first year they revealed various types of menstrual disorders including amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, anovulation, short luteal phase or prolonged follicular phase in ovulatory cycle. 23 sudents among them with these menstrual dysfunctions were selected for the plasma hormonal study. The first test was done with 4 amenorrheic students and 1 normally menstruating athletic student as a control. The blood samples were taken 3 times in every ten days and assayed immunoradiologically for the levels of LH, FSH, E_2, prolactin and testosterone. The hormonal profile of amenorrheicathletes was distinct from that of a normal control. The level of every hormone was low and the levels of LH, FSH and E_2 did not show cyclic changes as in a control. This fact may indicate some dysfunctions in the reproductive system of the amenorrheic athletes. The second hormonal assay was carried out with 18 athletic students with other types of menstrual dysfunctions and 14 regularly menstruating non-athletic students of the faculty of Child Education as the control. The blood samples were taken twice at interval of two weeks and assayed for LH, FSH, E_2, progesterone and prolactin. The levels of hormones of these athletes were not so much different from those of the control. However, the level of progesterone in luteal phase of anovulatory athletes was very low and much less as compared with normal values of the control and ovulatory athletes. It is obvious that the present study with a single hormonal assay in each phase of a menstrual cycle will be insufficient to obtain distinct profiles for these dysfunctions and will require more frequent sampling of the blood at many points of a cyele to clarify these menstrual dysfunctions associated with exercise.
