The goal of this course was to improve the speaking and listening abilities of the students. Exercises were conducted in a manner which required that most of the students were speaking throughout most of the class. Basic non-verbal communication aspects such as chronemics and proxemics were employed as well. Since this course was primarily oral, the testing method was designed to test a moderately sized class of about 40 students orally within the time allowed for the final examination. The methods used during the academic year for instruction have proven effective. Changes may be required, however, as the material used to date is no longer published in that form; it has been revised considerably. Consequently, the final examination will have to be rewritten. This is perhaps fortunate in light of the developments this year where it was discovered that the students had somehow learned the contents of the tests and had memorized only certain areas in anticipation of the test they thought they would have. The method itself, however, is very practical and effective because it allows the teacher to see each student's progress and give a grade based on her speaking abilities. Testing small groups of five students gives each student ample time to speak and allows the whole class to be tested within the prescribed time. In the future, however, a greater number of tests should be prepared and the order in which they are given should perhaps be alternated to prevent the students from having any idea of which one they will have. If they should somehow relate the contents of these tests to one another after they have been tested, the fact that most of the material from the text has been employed in the tests would still require the students to do much reviewing of the whole text. Each year new information is learned from the course and this combined with the results of past knowledge enable the teacher to teach more effectively covering more material with better results in the same period of time. Likewise, the ability of each succeeding year of students should show improvement and the general level of their spoken English ability gradually raised. It is hoped that the quality of education, particularly that for classes averaging 40 students, will continually be improved by developing and improving new teaching technics.
