Yabuuchi (2003) investigated directness and aggressiveness of SA(-H) (i.e., speech acts inherently costly to addressee), with respect to six different cultures (German, French, British, American, Chinese, and Japanese). The present paper focused on the other features contributing to the formation of negative politeness impression. They were the features concerning (1) expressing apology, thank, and modesty, (2) questions on private matters, (3) substantive acts associated with negative politeness such as [a] treatment of personal space, [b] treatment of personal possessions, [c] loudness of voice in public places, [d] driving manner, and [e] punctuality, adherence to one's promise, and public morality. The findings (including those for directness and aggressiveness) were tentatively quantified and ordered as follows. [+NP] : British (43) > Japanese (40) > German (39) > American (36) > French (32) > Chinese (24).
