• Yabuuchi (2002) delineated the purpose and method of the current research. The present article focused on the relative magnitudes of directness and aggressiveness of the speech acts which are at cost to the addressees (SA[-H]) as to six different cultures: German, French, British, American, Chinese, and Japanese. The investigation was conducted through reviewing experiential accounts by the writers who have good knowledge of communication styles of the target cultures in comparative perspectives with those of other cultures. The result obtained was as follows. The magnitude of directness and aggressiveness in SA[-H]: Chinese ≒French≒German >American>British>Japanese.
