Singapore was part of Malaysia from September 16, 1963. On 9 August 1965, Singapore separated from Malaysia, she assumed full sovereignty over her territory. She became an independent member of the British Commonwealth and was admitted to the United Nations. When the first Parliament of independent Singapore met in December 1965, two bills were passed to complete the formalities of Singapore's independence: the Constitution (Amendment) bill and the Independence of Singapore Bill. The Constitution (Amendment) Act took the State Constitution of Singapore within Malaysia as the basis for the new constitution, with some modifications. The Independence of Singapore Act deleted some of the provisions of Malaysian Constitution which were not considered applicable to Singapore. The aim of this paper is to approach Singapore's constitutional development in the post-independent era, especially an unwieldly constitution in three parts: the Constitution of Singapore (including amendments made after Singapore's separation); the Republic of Singapore Independence Act 1965; the Constitution of Malaysia, certain provisions of which were made applicable by the Republic of Singapore Independence Act 1965, from the point of view of Constitutional Law and Politics.
