On-body area ultra wideband (UWB) communication is promising for new bio-medical or entertainment applications. In this paper, a numerical approach together with a realistic shape human body model has been adopted to evaluate its communication performance with the specific absorption rate (SAR) consideration. Based on the numerical approach, the on-body channel path loss characteristic has been derived as a power decay law, and it has been validated by the measurement. The SAR under FCC emission spectral mask has also been calculated and found to have a 30dB margin with respect to the IEEE safety guideline. Based on the derived path loss characteristic and the permissible maximum transmitted power, the bit error rate (BER) performance verse communication distance has been derived for a typical UWB impulse radio (UWB-IR) modulation scheme.
