In the Japanese health insurance system, therapeutic aphereses have been reimbursed since 1981 when the hemoadsorption with a charcoal column for hepatic coma was approved to be reimbursed by the health insurance system. Plasma exchange, double filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP), plasma adsorption and continuous hemofiltration for hepatic diseases such as fulminant hepatitis, post operative hepatic failure and acute hepatic failure were thereafter approved for reimbursement. Viral reduction therapy with DFPP for chronic type C viral hepatitis refractory to conventional interferon therapy was approved for reimbursement this year.
