Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate responses of lymphocytes and glutamine levels during a 7-day period after endurance running at three different levels of intensity and the relation between serum glutamine and lymphocytes. Exercise prescribed for the immune system was discussed. Materials and methods: Seven untrained female college students volunteered for this study. They carried out sub-maximal a graded exercise test using a treadmill to determine the exercise intensities inducing 2, 3 and 4mmol/l blood lactate levels. Thereafter, they carried out 30 minute- running on a treadmill at the intensities. Venous blood was sampled the pre and post-running, on the 1^<st>, 3^<rd> and 7^<th> day after the running to analyze for leukocytes, lymphocytes and glutamine. Results: Lymphocytes decreased significantly from the 1^<st> to 3^<rd> day after the 30 minute-running at 4mmol/l blood lactate level. On the 7^<th> day after the running, there was a tendency for lymphocytes to increase above the pre-exercise levels, which was the greatest at 3mmol/l blood lactate level. The decrease of glutamine level post-exercise correlated significantly with a reduction of lymphocytes from post-running to the 1^<st> day after the running. Conclusions: Lymphocytes are decreased from the 1st to 3^<rd> day after 30 minute-running at 4mmol/l blood lactate level. The reduction of serum glutamine level is related to the reduction in lymphocytes, indicating that glutamine serving as fuel for lymphocytes will influence lymphocytes levels after exercise. Thirty minutes of running inducing 3mmol/l blood lactate level produces a slight reduction in lymphocytes until the 3^<rd> day after the exercise and thereafter an increase in lymphocytes above the pre-exercise level, suggesting that it is possible to prescribe for the better condition of immune system.
