A series of experiment was performed in a low speed wind tunnel to study the unsteady behavior of tip leakage vortex affected by inflow unsteadiness, and the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of a blade exposed to unsteady tip vortex. When periodic gust was introduced into the incoming flow, a remarkable change in tip vortex intensity was revealed during one period of the gust passage. The tip vortex was observed to disappear if the gust arrived at the blade leading edge. In the case where a flat plate blade was inserted in downstream field, the path of the tip vortex was found to widely shift in the spanwise direction due to the solid surface effect of the flat plate. When the tip vortex from a rotating cascade was periodically introduced into a flat plate blade, a noticeable unsteady pressure was generated on the blade in addition to the pressure induced by two-dimensional wake effect.
