The Modified Rankine Cycle Integrated Turbine System (MORITS) proposed by the authors is a hydrogen-oxygen fired closed cycle power generation system. MORITS is a variant of the double reheat Rankine cycle system that uses a high-temperature combustion turbine without a steam compressor. GRAZ, proposed by Professor Jericha of Graz University of Technology (in Austria), is another hydrogen-oxygen fired closed cycle system that integrates the Brayton cycle system with the Rankine-cycle system. The major difference between these two systems is the presence of a steam compressor in the GRAZ system. MORITS requires no steam compressor, since it is a variant of the condensed steam turbine cycle system. On the other hand, GRAZ has a steam compressor which is used as one component for the gas turbine cycle. The design of both systems is based on the fact that extra-high-temperature steam is generated when hydrogen combusts with pure oxygen, and that a hydrogen-oxygen fired closed cycle system emits no CO_2. The working fluid used in the hydrogen-oxygen fired high-temperature combustion turbine and in the heat recovery steam cycle unit is water. Therefore, the MORITS system can function as a single integrated cycle system. MORITS performance depends on the combustion turbine inlet temperature. At 1700℃, its thermal efficiency will exceed 60% (HHV) at the generator end. One serious problem facing the hydrogen fired turbine is that hydrogen, as a secondary source of energy, is ten times more expensive than primary fossil fuels, partly because hydrogen should preferably be generated from renewable energy resources. The author has proposed the development of a hydrogen decomposing turbine system in another paper. If hydrogen can be generated cheaply from natural gas using a membrane reformer, MORITS could become feasible in the near future.
