SiC whisker reinforced Si_3N_4 ceramics were fabricated by slip casting as material to be applied to a turbine nozzle used at 1673K without a cooling system. It was found by observation of the microstructure that SiC whiskers in the sintered bodies were orientated parallel to the mold surface and were aligned nearly one-dimensionally. The sinterability was improved by the alignment of SiC whiskers and by use of a combination of suitable additives. The fully dense 20wt% SiC whisker composites having superior mechanical properties were obtained by pressureless sintering and post-HIPing. The Si_3N_4-SiC whisker composites vanes without shroud could be fabricated by slip casting. The vanes built in the metal shroud rings were tested in hot gas streams. The ceramics composites vanes had no damage after testing.
