The share of gas turbine combined cycle plants tends to increase very rapidly in the world market of power generation. A forecast for next 10 years says more than 60% of new installations will be a combined cycle. As for fuel supply, natural gas is going to be predominant, which also pushes up the share of combined cycle (See Fig.-1 and Fig.-2). Another major change in the market is that the number of 'Non-utility Company', such as IPP's and Merchant plants, is considerably increasing. The trend of deregulation all over the world forced the market to become very competitive. The competition of guaranteeing the higher performance, lower emissions and higher availability is becoming much more severe than before. The regulations for emission are also getting much more severe year by year. The NO_x level of 25ppm or less at gas turbine exit and negligible [Figure]Fig.1 A Forecast of Thermal Power Plant Market (1999〜2008) [Figure]Fig.2 A Forecast of Demand for Type of Fuels to be used for Thermal Power Plants ppm at stack exit with SCR become the world standard. Other emissions, such as CO, VOC and particulate, also have to be minimized. The combustion control to stabilize the flame at lean fuel-to-air ratio is one of the most important technologies for all gas turbine manufacturers. For gas turbine development, 'F' class engine, which has a firing temperature of 1300-1400℃, is predominant in the current market. The combined cycle efficiency of 55-57% (LHV) is the average for 'F' class combined cycle power plants. In some manufacturers, 'G' class or 'H' class engines, which has the firing temperature of around 1500℃ and achieves the combined cycle efficiency of 58-60% (LHV), have already been developed and have started operation. Those new engines will soon be perfected to play major completed roll for high-efficient power generation in the next decade. This new engine technology will soon mature into a leader in high efficient power generation in the next decade.
