IGTC-72 Nitridation of Various Plasma Spray Coatings on IN-738LC in a Nitrogen Gas Flow(Session C-6 SURFACE COATING)

Nitridation phenomena of various MCrAlY coatings on IN-738LC were investigated by accelerated test in pure nitrogen gas flow. Aluminum nitrides and titanium nitrides were observed in the bare IN-738LC sample after the nitridation test. The coating samples showed different nitridation behavior. It seemed to be caused by the difference of the process whereby the nitrogen penetrates through the coating layers. The NiCoCrAlY coating showed high endurance to the nitridation because of the protective oxide layer growth on its surface. However, high velocity and local nitridation of IN-738 substrate occurred in the CoNiCrAlY coating sample. The CoCrAlY layer protected the superalloy substrate because the aluminum in this layer reacted on the nitrogen, so that the nitrogen was trapped in the coating layer.
