A study of a light and compact heat exchanger for an application on a future Turbomeca helicopter engine has been carried out. The first part of this paper will be devoted to the choice of the concept and the heat transfer surface. Mass and volume evaluation of several matrix configurations are performed and compared for the technical specifications required. It will be demonstrated that the Franckel surface gives the best result (minimum mass and minimum volume) associated with a cross flow recuperator. In the second part, in which the most suitable design solution will be selected, the annular conception was chosen, this is a plate heat exchanger using Frankel surfaces. The final design takes into account the material selected (refractory alloy VKh-4A) as well as the results of the thermomechanical calculations. The last part will deal with the experimental set up described in detail. The main experimental results are presented and compared to the predicted performances.
