This special lecture aims at the introduction to the dominating problems in the aerodynamic research of turbomachines and their linkage with each other in respect of the performance of a multistage machine. The state-of-the-art in predicting the flow for multistage machines and their components is reported for the various levels of numerical simulation methods. Conclusions from recent workshops on the present status of CFD-methods are reflected. Selected topics of experimental research demonstrate the necessity of 3D-flow measurements in stages and multi-stage machines to understand the complicated physics of the unsteady viscous flows. From these test results improved loss models for all loss sources involved, including blade row interaction, are expected as well as test case data for the validation of numerical simulation methods. Main goals of current and future research are commented considering the trend to a fully theoretical handling of future turbomachinery design.
