Emerging availability of advanced composites is leading to large gains in future aero gas turbine engines. Carbon-carbon composites are one of the significant developments. This program was undertaken to access this potential, and to demonstrate the viability of this material system for gas turbine applications. A set of annular flameholders was the chosen component system. These were designed, fabricated, coated, and successfully engine tested. The design of the attachments, and obtaining adequate oxidation protection coatings on the carbon-carbon parts proved to be most challenging. Overall, the program has been a great success. Concerns remain about the viability of oxidation protection systems under certain environmental conditions, such as humidity.
