New design, material and fabrication technologies are needed to achieve the main design requirements of high temperatures, strength and stiffness for the new generation of engines for the year 2000. Considerable expectation is based on the emerging potential of developing and using advanced composites using high temperature polymers, metals, ceramics, and carbon as matrices, with fibers of carbon and ceramics as reinforcements. Significant initial progress has already been made, and this establishes an emerging fundamental change in the material systems and technologies for the future gas turbine engines. However, several critical gaps and challenges exist, and the corresponding technologies need to be developed. As a result, the potential gains, which indeed are very large, remain largely to be realized in the longer term.
