Counter rotating swirlers were investigated with fuel injection into the annular shear layer separating the two swirling flows. The influence on NO_x emissions of the dump expansion ratio, D/d, from the swirler outer diameter, d, to the combustor diameter D was studied. Two methods of varying this were studied, increasing the combustor diameter, D, and inserting a shroud downstream of the swirler so as to reduce d at constant D. This shrouded swirler produced a marked reduction in the NO_x emissions, which was shown using internal gas composition measurements to be due to improved fuel and air mixing. Large reductions in NO_x emissions were also found for the larger expansion ratio of 1.8 with the larger combustor. The reduced flame stability showed that this NO_x reduction was also due to the improved fuel and air mixing.
