Catalytic combustion method is attracting a great deal of attention as an ultra low NO_x combustion method. One of the main problems in developing a catalytic combustor is the durability of catalyst at high temperature operating conditions. The hybrid catalytic combustor has advantages concerned with durability of catalyst, because the catalyst can be operated within its tolerable temperature utilizing gas phase combustion occured at the downstream of the catalyst. The authers have designed and developed the full scale catalytic combustor, applicable to a 200MW class gas turbine, and carried out combustion tests with natural gas fuel under atmospheric pressure condition. This paper describes the concept of the hybrid catalytic combustor, system evaluation based on the calculation and the combustion test results. These data have indicated possibilities of practical use.
