Research and development on an advanced gas turbine, sponsored by the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), commenced in 1978. As one of the themes of the R & D, a pilot plant (the AGTJ-100A) has been designed and manufactured to prove the possibility of achieving a combined cycle power generation efficiency of more than 50% (LHV base) in a reheat cycle operation. Trial operations of the pilot plant have been in progress at the Sodegaura Power Station of the Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. since 1984, and almost all tests of the plant were completed in May 1987. An overview of the R & D of the advanced gas turbine, the features of the reheat gas turbine and its test results up to Phase III have already been reported. (Refer to References 1), and 3) to 11).) This report provides a summary of the pilot plant program and describes the some problems of the reheat gas turbine as encountered in the tests up to Phase III, as well as the corrective actions taken. In addition, the test results of the improved pilot plant up to the end of May 1987 are described.
