The Quiet STOL research aircraft "ASUKA" which has been developed by the National Aerospace Laboratory since 1977, made its first flight in October, 1985. It is powered by four Japanese FJR710/600S turbofan engines installed in an upper-surface-blowing (USB) propulsive lift system. The FJR710/600S is the latest and slightly modified version of the FJR710/600 prototype engine developed under a National Research and Development Program of MITI from 1971 to 1982. Although it was relatively immature engine, the NAL-QSTOL required a very complex engine installation with a confluent exhaust system. Extensive testing and analysis, including full-scale ground rig tests of the propulsion system, were carried out. The flight tests of the engine in a FTB aircraft were also executed. ASUKA's flight tests are now in progress. The present paper describes the installation and operation features of the FJR710/600S engine in the NAL-QSTOL ASUKA, with some detailed discussions on leading test results and improvements applied to the engine.
