• Experiments have been carried out to study the effects of free stream turbulence on full-coverage film cooling on convex, flat and concave walls. The cooling effectiveness as well as the velocity and temperature distributions in the boundary layer on each wall with discrete hole injection are measured. The wall-surface temperature distributions are obtained by the thermal mapping with liquid crystals and the successive digital image processing. On the concave wall, the secondary flow injected is influenced considerably by the free stream turbulence, resulting in the enhanced diffusion of the secondary flow and, hence, the decrease of the cooling effectiveness. On the other hand, the free stream turbulence has little effect in the case of the convex wall. On the flat wall, the presence of free stream turbulence produces comparatively flat spanwise distributions of the local cooling effectiveness but affects little the spanwise-averaged cooling effectiveness.
