Compositional Dependence of Exchange Anisotropy in γ-Mn-Ir-Rh-Ru/Co_<70>Fe_<30> Bilayers

Exchange anisotropy of quaternary γ-Mn-Ir-Rh-Ru/Co_<70>Fe_<30> bilayer has been investigated. Unidirectional anisotropy constant, J_k, exhibited gradual change against the chemical composition of the quaternary system. Contour map of J_k shows a broad peak at the compositional range from Mn_<75>Ir_<25> to Mn_<79>Ir_<15>Rh_6. The J_k decreases mainly along the direction to which the Ru content increases. The thinnest critical thickness of the antiferromagnetic layer is obtained for Mn-Ir alloy among the respective terminal binary alloy systems. We concluded that Mn-Ir is the most promising antiferromagnetic material for exchange-biased bilayers in ultra-high density hard disk drives among the present γ-Mn-Ir-Rh-Ru quaternary system.
