The reliability of ceramic turbine rotors at high temperatures was evaluated using a newly-designed hot gas spin test rig. With the turbine inlet gas temperature at 1200℃ under load-free conditions, the highest tip speed at which silicon nitride turbine rotors having an 85mm blade tip diameter ran for 5 minutes without failure was 600m/s. Based on approximate calculations, this paper discusses how temperatures of turbine rotors differed in hot gas spin tests under load-free conditions, and in a gas turbine engine under loaded conditions. Some key points in the design of the turbine rotors and the test rig are also presented.
