In response to the demand for 3600rpm gas turbines of improved reliability for base-load duty in combined-cycle plants, Kraftwerk Union (KWU) has scaled down its largest standard 3000rpm combustion turbine design to render it suitable for 60Hz power generation. This new Model V84 gas turbine incorporates all the technical refinements of the most modern Model V94 machines operating in 50Hz countries. The paper first explains the design philosophy underlying the principal characteristic construction features of both sister models for 50Hz and 60Hz applications and discusses the resultant operational benefits. It summarizes the design and performance data of both standard machines. The fuel-burning versatility of the associated pair of silo-type multi-burner combustion chambers are mentioned, as also the measures to reduce NO_x emissions to even lower levels than presently prescribed. The paper then deals with the integration of the Model V84 and V94 combustion turbines into various combined-cycle arrangements with and without cogeneration. Special emphasis is laid on the standard KWU unfired combined-cycle (GUD) plant concept. The authors conclude their contribution with observations on the potential of gas turbines for further improvement of single-cycle and particularly combined-cycle performance to achieve the most economical and environmentally acceptable form of conversion of fossil fuels to electrical energy and cogenerated useful heat.
