On "The introduction of Kanazoshi (novels in 1600-1680)" [Kokugo-kokubun Kenkyu No.3], I already wrote about the inevitable rise of Kanazoshi, their authors, their minute classifications according to the times, and about the works from the systematic point. Therefore, in order to avoid repetition, now I have begun to study on the essence of Kanazoshi, with classification of the prevailing styles in those days. The rise of the popular styles in Kanazoshi means not only the rise of journalism in the recent times, but the commercialization of literature, and it reveals the new phenomenon that the requests of the commons could be manifested in literature. The various styles show the literary sense of the commons. I have divided the popular styles into seven main classes as the follwing: --- 1. narratives. 2. catechetical tales. 3. tales of facts. 4. descriptive stories of the noted places. 5. tales in mediaeval style. 6. rumours of popular prostitutes. 7. essays. According to this classification, I have classified various works with explanation in each. I conclussion I have treated the world of Kanazoshi and their essence. In short, the world of "Kanazoshi" and their essence were literature itself or the sense of literature by common people who had come to be powerful in accordance with the reconstruction of feudalism ; and it may be said that no world had ever been so modern before. On the contrary, that modern sense was so impetuous that chaos, immaturity and variety followed, and no literary consolidation was to be found yet. However chaotic the world might be, its significance must be noticed. Above all, the existence of the new risen vitality in conspicuously worthy of remarking. And its prevailing styles could be considered as versatile manifestations of the very new vitality. Therefore, some interesting problems on the development of the new literature are possibly supposed to reveal themselves.
