Among the works of Nikolai Gogol, "Hans Kuechelgarten" does not seem to have attracted much attention of literary historians, evidently owing to its relatively small artistic merit. However, it cannot be denied that it affords a clue for understanding the process of the development of Gogol's artistic talent before he established his fame by his "Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka." Moreover, it has a considerable interest as a work markedly influenced in its subject-matter and style by other contemporary poets, both home and abroad. The author of the present paper attempted to analyse this Idyl, referring also, to some extent, to the influence of Voss' "Luise" and the works of other poets upon it. But the theme which the author handled with a special emphasis is that of the date of its composition. Through an analysis of the Idyl itself as well as various historical and biographical data, the author has reached the conclusion that, most likely, it was begun in 1828 and finished early in 1829. Although lack of materials makes it impossible to decide upon this question with absolute exactitude, the author believes that this conslusion has more solid historical foundation than the theories suggested by IOFANOV on the one hand, KLEMAN and BELETSKII on the other, who constider 1827 and 1829 respectivity, as the only possible date of its composition.
