The pilgrimage to the Thity-Three Holy Places of Kwannon of Saigoku, known as the most typical example of all pilgrimages of Japan, took its rise in the twelfth century and was performed exclusively by devout priests for so many ages. The pilgrimage, however, was also made frequently from the end of the fourteenth century by pious people. Probability this tendency was stimulated not only by their material prosperity, but also by the constant economic patronage of pious communities. In imitation of the Thirty-Three Holy Places of Kwannon of Saigoku, throghout the country there were kept the Local Thirty-Three Holy Place of Kwannon, which increased remarkably in number from the seventeenth century or so. The pilgrimage of Saigoku, therefore, has been by degrees on the wane.
