The νουδ-ποιητικσδ theory in Aristotles's de Anima is very difficult and many in- terpretations have been tried since the first trial of his pupil, Theophrastus. As is well known, Aristotle's νουδ-ποιητικσδ theory is Paltonic and speculative. In Arabian and Scholastic phiolosophy, it was received and developed variously. Many philosophers interpreted it in their proper ways, and incorporated it into their systems. Above all the controversy between Thomas Aquinas and Siger of Brabant in the 13th century is very important. This paper treats of the development of the νουδ-ποιητικσδ problem through the various opinions of Greek commentators, and Arabic and Scholastic philosophers. Especially I set focus on the Thomas-Siger controversy. On account of the space given for me, I have to separate this paper into two parts, and this time to get only the former part published. As for the latter, I hope to have another opportunity.
