Of Macbeth, as of all the other works of Shakespeare, a variety of things have been said. For instance, some considered it as a tragedy of fate, like the Greek tragedy, another as a tragedy of conscience, and the third as a tragedy of ambition. But it would be rather an act of boldness to treat it in such a manner and apply to it any definite type. Macbeth is a work of extreme nicety and complexity. It implies many problems of human nature itself: it implies the delicate psychological movement, the strength of will, ambition, conscience, terror, repentance, fate, and supernatural problems, and, further, the interrelatins of these. In this essay the writer has made some efforts in explaining the complexity of Macbeth, by studying chiefly the character of Macbeth and then that of Lady Macbeth.
