20801 Inverse Analysis Based on BEM and Magnetic Field Measurement for Detecting Corrosion of Steel in Concrete

The combination of boundary element inverse analysis and magnetic field measurement was employed for detecting the corrosion of steel in concrete. A better sensitivity of corrosion identification can be achieved if the SQUID sensor could be applied to measuring a very low magnetic field on the concrete structure. Inverse analysis was carried out by minimizing a cost function using a downhill simplex method. The cost function is a residual between the calculated and measured magnetic flux density on the concrete structure. The magnetic flux density is calculated based on the law of Biot and Savart and taking into account the current that flows in the concrete domain and that in the steel in concrete. An example using numerical simulation data shows that the location of corrosion area on the steel in the concrete structure can be effectively detected from five magnetic field data on the concrete structure.
